Vertrel® XMS Plus is an industrial-strength defluxer. It has excellent solvency for cleaning ionic soils and flux residues from electronic assemblies. In a test with RMA and RA flux soldered assemblies, Vertrel® XMS Plus gave lower ionics and residual rosin levels when compared to the classic benchmark defluxer, a CFC-113/methanol azeotrope, under actual production cleaning operations. Aside from being environmentally benign, the unique physical properties of Vertrel® XMS Plus include a high density, low viscosity and low surface tension for the optimal cleaning of both insoluble (particulate) and soluble (organic) soils. The product is a proprietary blend of a nonflammable hydrofluorocarbon HFC solvent called HFC 43-10mee which is also known as 2,3-dihydrodeca-fluoropentane which is then blended with trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, cyclopentane and methanol. This cleaner is one of the more active cleaners in the Vertrel® family. The product has performance characteristics similar to Vertrel® SMT, but with a wider range of solvency for most types of soils and flux residues. Users will chose this product when dealing with stubborn contamination or tight spacings, and durable materials of construction. Details about the solvent and its physical properties are found in the DuPont Product Spec sheet, available as a PDF file.
Vertrel® XMS Plus is compatible with most polymeric materials commonly used for components mounted on printed wiring board assemblies. Acrylic, ABS and polycarbonate parts, particularly if under stress, may show slight cracking or crazing damage. EPDM, butyl rubber, Buna-S and neoprene are recommended for elastomeric parts. The cleaner also was found to be compatible with zinc, stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and copper. This cleaner is one of the more active cleaners in the Vertrel® family. Therefore, thorough materials compatibility testing prior to deployment is particularly important.
Data from acute toxicity studies has demonstrated that Vertrel® XMS Plus has low toxicity. DuPont has assigned the cleaner an 8-hour AEL of 197 ppm, with a 400 ppm ceiling. Vertrel® XMS Plus is a very stable near-azeotrope blend. It has no flash point, which means it is very safe for use in vapor defluxers under normal operating conditions. For example, Vertrel® XMS Plus exhibits no closed cup flash point per the Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester (ASTM D93) and is not classified as a flammable liquid by NFPA or DOT. For further details about the safety of the solvent carefully read and understand the data in the DuPont Material Safety Data Sheet, available as a PDF file. Vertrel® specialty fluids have "zero" ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential. It has been accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program as a substitute for ozone-depleting substances. The components of Vertrel® XMS Plus are TSCA listed.
Vertrel® XMS Plus is thermally stable and does not oxidize or degrade during storage. Vertrel® XMS Plus is available commercially in 55-gal (208-L) drums, in 5-gal (19-L) pails and one-gallon (five liter) packages. One-liter canisters are available from Micro Care Marketing Services on request. Customers are encouraged to secure samples now for compatibility and performance testing.
