Vertrel® XM is a mild defluxer and degreaser featuring new HFC technologies from DuPont. The product is a patented azeotrope of a nonflammable hydrofluorocarbon HFC solvent called HFC 43-10mee (which is also known as 2,3-dihydrodeca-fluoropentane) and methanol. It is ideally suited for use in vapor degreasing equipment because it is nonflammable at all normal temperatures and conditions. The cleaner also offers high density, low viscosity and low surface tension which makes it unusually effective at particle and soil removal. It offers improved solvency for polar soils while maintaining excellent compatibility with most plastic, ceramic and metal components. Typical applications include precision and specialty cleaning and rinsing for removal of particulate, fingerprints, and light soils from metal, plastic, and glass parts. Engineers will select this cleaner when moderately mild cleaning is required, the contamination is soluble in the solvent, and materials compatibility is a serious concern. Details about the solvent and its physical properties are found in the DuPont Product Spec sheet, available as a PDF file.
Most plastics and elastomers can be safely cleaned in Vertrel® XM. Only one common plastic -- cellulosic -- is incompatible with Vertrel® XM. No test elastomers failed the compatibility tests. The cleaner is compatible with zinc, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass even after exposure for two weeks at 100°C (212°F). Contact with highly basic process materials, pH 10 or above, is not recommended.
Data from acute toxicity studies has demonstrated that Vertrel® XM has low toxicity. DuPont has assigned the product a calculated 8-hour TWA AEl of 200 ppm, with a 400 ppm "never exceed" ceiling. Vertrel® XM is a slight skin and eye irritant and has low acute inhalation toxicity. Vertrel® XM exhibits no closed cup or open cup flash point and is not classified as a flammable liquid by NFPA or DOT. For further details about the safety of the solvent carefully read and understand the data in the DuPont Material Safety Data Sheet, available as a PDF file. Vertrel® specialty fluids have "zero" ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential. Vertrel® XM has been accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program, as a substitute for ozone-depleting substances. The components of Vertrel® XM are TSCA listed.
Due to the azeotropic nature of Vertrel® XM, the product is easily recoverable by off-line or in-line distillation equipment such as vapor degreasers and stills. Vertrel® XM is thermally stable and does not oxidize or degrade during storage. Vertrel® XM is commercially available in 55-gal (208-L) drums, 5-gal (19-L) pails and one gallon (five liter) packages. One-liter samples are available from MicroCare Marketing Services on request. Customers are encouraged to secure samples now for compatibility and performance testing.
