Vertrel® MCA Plus Data Sheet (PDF)

Vertrel® MCA Plus is a powerful degreaser for metals, plastics, glass and ceramics. It is a clear, colorless liquid with almost no aroma. The unique properties of Vertrel® MCA Plus include a high density, low viscosity, and low surface tension. Engineered and optimized for the removal of soluble organic contamination like oils, it also delivers excellent results on Krytox-like greases and oils, plus insoluble contamination such as metal particles. It is ideally suited for precision metal cleaning and other specialty applications with the most difficult soils.

Vertrel® MCA Plus is a proprietary blend of HFC 43-10mee (which is also known as 2,3-dihydrodeca-fluoropentane) and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene and cyclopentane.

The primary reason customers select Vertrel® MCA Plus is due to its excellent solvency of oils and grease in combination with the nonflammable, azeotropic nature of the solvent. Together these factors means the cleaner will deliver the aggressive cleaning while being safely used in heated cleaning systems and cost-effectively recycled.

Details about the solvent and its physical properties are found in the DuPont Product Spec sheet, available as a PDF file.

Solvency

Vertrel® MCA Plus has excellent miscibility with hydrocarbon oils, esters, ketones, ethers, ether-alcohols, and the lower alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol and isopropanol. The lower hydrocarbons, such as hexane and heptane, are also soluble.

Vertrel® MCA Plus has excellent materials compatibility. The product will not affect most polymeric materials commonly encountered in degreasing of precision parts. EPDM, butyl rubber, Buna-S and neoprene are recommended for elastomeric parts. The cleaner is compatible with aluminum, copper, zinc, carbon steel, and stainless steel. Testing before widespread deloyment is recommended.

Safety and Environmental Issues

Data from acute toxicity studies has demonstrated that Vertrel® MCA Plus has low toxicity. It is a slight skin and eye irritant and has low inhalation toxicity. As with most of the Vertrel® products, this cleaner is not flammable. Vertrel® MCA Plus is a very stable near-azeotrope blend. Detailed testing has found Vertrel® MCA Plus to be very stable in vapor degreasers under normal operating conditions.

The product does exhibit vapor flammability limits in air. Laboratory tests with virgin solvent in an open vessel show the solvent will not sustain combustion, and quickly self-extinguishes. For example, the product exhibits no closed cup flash point per the Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester (ASTM D93). As such, it is not classified as a flammable liquid by NFPA or DOT.

For further details about the safety of the solvent carefully read and understand the data in the DuPont Material Safety Data Sheet, available as a PDF file.

Vertrel® MCA Plus has "zero" ozone-depletion potential and low global warming potential. It has been accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program as a substitute for ozone-depleting substances. The components of Vertrel® MCA Plus are TSCA listed.

Packaging, Storage and Availability

Vertrel® MCA Plus is easily recoverable by off-line and in-line distillation equipment such as a vapor degreaser or a still. It is thermally stable and does not oxidize or degrade during storage.

Vertrel® MCA Plus is available commercially in 55-gal (208-L) drums, 5-gal (19-L) pails and one-gallon (five liter) packages. One liter samples are available from Micro Care Marketing Services on request. Customers are encouraged to secure samples for compatibility and performance testing.
