This Dry Lubricant Stays
Where You Sprays
VDX Dry Lubricant is a fast-evaporating spray that delivers a high quality dry surface precision lubricant. Years ago, this was the first
ozone-safe dry lubricant that is completely inert on all types of plastics. Today, after years of service, non-toxic and nonflammable VDX Spray is still a great choice for cost-effective precision lubrication.
The VDX Dry Lubricant Spray is has been engineered to minimize surface friction between precision components made from metals, plastics, ceramics and other advanced materials. The lubricant is a powdered form of the well-proven fluorotelomer lubricants. Aside from being plastic-safe, this material is non-migrating, non-flammable, non-conductive and essentially non-toxic. (It may not be suitable for use on some types of electronics since the
lubricating residue acts as an insulator.) It can also be an effective mold release for room-temperature applications. Ozone-safe, VDX Spray delivers consistent lubrication without harmful chemistries.
The lubricant is carried onto the part in an atomized spray. The carrier is tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) which is non-toxic and
nonflammable. The lubricant and carrier are deposited
simultaneously. While wet, the lubricant can easily be removed but after approximately 20 seconds the carrier will evaporate, leaving a thin, uniform dispersion that is relatively long lasting.
One specific application for VDX Spray is precision lubrication. Precision lubrication is a high value-added manufacturing process; the slippery coating usually becomes part of the finished goods and enhances the performance of the product or assembly. Dip-tank lubrication is insufficiently precise for this application because it would deposit too much lubricant or deposit it in places where it is not desired
(see photo, right). With low toxicity and superior plastic compatibility, the VDX Spray is ideal.
The product also works well when the surfaces to be lubricated are curved or vertical, such as in precision molding. Because of the peculiar nature of the chemistry, with VDX it is very easy to produce a smooth, even layer of lubricant across a non-horizontal surface without drips, runs or puddles. This improves quality and reduces reject rates.
VDX Is Inert on Plastics
VDX Spray is inert chemically and safe for most components. It can be used on glass, ceramic, metals, plastics, cured epoxies, flex laminates, solder masks and alloys. The rapid evaporation of the spray cools the components; engineers should check to determine if thermal stress may be a concern.
Health, Safety and Environmental Issues
The VDX Spray has been proven safe over many years. The aerosol
product is a
nonflammable mixture. The propellant has been assigned a
safety rating of
1,000 ppm (TWA)
by ACGIH which means it is considered even safer than ordinary rubbing
alcohol. In addition, none of the ingredients are known or suspected
carcinogens. None of the ingredients are listed by NTP, IARC or OSHA as known or suspected carcinogens. However, the aerosols are pressurized to 85 psi/4700 mm Hg. Avoid exposing the containers to flames or heat, including prolonged exposures to tropical sunlight.
This product is not compatible with the money-saving
Trigger Grip
dispensing system. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for additional details.
All the ingredients in VDX Spray are chlorine-free and completely
ozone-safe. The product contains 38 grams/liter of alcohol which may be regulated as a Volatile Organic Compound (VOCs).
The material has a low
Global Warming index. None of the materials in these products are subject to environmental warning labels (U.S. Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 611).
Custom Blends Are Readily Available
The VDX Spray is an excellent lubricant, but many customers need
something more. The most common requirement is for
bulk liquids which
can be used in dip tanks. Other customers wish to buy a
fluoropolymer
concentrate that has been customized to their own specific needs. Micro
Care can (and does!) accommodate all of these needs effortlessly.
