What Safety Warnings are Required When Using Vertrel® Solvents?

There are three main safety warnings required for these products. None are onerous, and most include a lot of common sense. Print a couple copies of this page and make sure your technicians understand these warnings:

Skin and Eye Contact

Some fluorocarbon liquids tend to remove natural oils from skin. Irritation of dry, sensitive skin may cause temporary irritation. Impervious gloves, protective clothing and eye protection are recommended. If liquids are splashed into eyes, flush eyes for several minutes with running water.

Inhalation

Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid product misuse; ddeliberate inhalation can produce intoxication and be fatal. Vapors are six to eight times heavier than air. Vapors tend to accumulate in low places. Inhalation of concentrated vapors can cause suffocation. Provide forced air ventilation when entering tanks or confined areas. High concentrations of vapors in confined spaces can be fatal due to lack of oxygen. Over-exposures may cause tremors or convulsions.

Spill/Leak Management

In the event of a spill or leak, blends may volatilize to be within flammable limits. Remove all possible ignition sources and provide ventilation in the event of a spill. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with open flames or hot surfaces because the product produces toxic materials upon contact with open flames or hot surfaces. Toxic decomposition products serve as warning agents.

Other FAQs offer additional information. FAQ 59 offers information about the best practices to use with these solvents. Other notes include additional information about flammability and safety in the factory. Gloves and eye protection are strongly recommended. If fumes are a concern -- such as when entering an enclosed area, or if it appears an employee has been mis-using the product, review FAQ 87 for details about the symptoms of over-exposure. There are a number of commercially-available fume monitoring systems which can track worker exposures and ensure that workers are using the products safely.
