Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, people used to clean electronics, ceramics, metal assemblies, optical devices and everything else in cleaning machines called vapor degreasers. Just about every factory had at least one such system, and many had several. They worked great. They cleaned fast, reliably and inexpensively. Training was never an issue: if you could find the "start" button you could use the machine. Life was good.
The key to the whole process was the solvent they used in these machines. It was called a "CFC" and marketed under several brand names, the most well-known of which was Freon®.
Then CFCs went away, and the vapor degreaser nearly became as extinct as the dinosaurs.
But vapor degreasing is getting a second chance, an option hopefully never to be offered to T. Rex. The reason for the revival is a new solvent in town. Its called an HFC and it does everything the old Freon® did, plus its safe for the environment. The new Freon® is called Vertrel® and is available only from DuPont.
But what about those vapor degreasers? Many younger engineers have no idea what they are, or looks like, or how they work. Many product designers have forgotten about the incredible designs and shapes that vapor degreasers easily cleaned. Many managers have forgotten about the labor- and cost-savings that vapor degreaser delivered. And many executives have forgotten about the issues of worker safety and environmental stewardship that good corporate governance requires.
With this web site, thats going to change. Theres about 70 megabytes of data here all organized for your edification. And to make it easy for all the engineers, designers, managers and executives, were also offering some useful tools to help you present this "new technology" to your peers and supervisors.
There are three presentations available as PDF files which can be used to explain how a vapor degreaser might help your company save money. There also is an Excel spreadsheet engineered to help you estimate your cleaning costs.
