Applications for the Vertrel® Products in Analytical Processes

The most varied arena in which Vertrel® products are used are the numerous analytical tests and processes which have been developed. Most of these tests rely on the unique properties of Vertrel® specialty fluids. Here are a few examples of the clever analytical procedures devised using Vertrel®:

  • Sometimes the problem is to develop a test to detect contamination. One such test is used in the oil industry to extract specific hydrocarbons from water. Since Vertrel® cleaners do not mix with water, the test is procedurally simple, fast to administer, and provides consistent, replicable results.

  • Sometimes the unique properties of Vertrel® are utilized creatively, such as the fast evaporation of the solvent. In a test to find fingerprints on pourous surfaces, one of the Vertrel® products is used as a carrier solvent for a special solution which was able to highlight fingerprints from very difficult surfaces.

  • Materials compatibility is a major issue with most analytical processes. Sometimes the goal is to find a solvent to selectively attack a material, such as polycarbonates, and test for residues from the polycarbonates. Sometimes the goal is to have a solvent which is completely inert on the tested material, so that other processes can be performed. The fingerprint test, above, is a good example of the use of the inert nature of certain Vertrel® products.
Many analytical processes feature the Vertrel® products from DuPont because of their stability, their purity, and the versatile degree of solvency which can be tailored into a product.

There are not many competitors to Vertrel® in the analytical industry. HCFC solvents are usually too aggressive and most of them are being phased out at the end of 2002. The PFC solvents are servious global warming issues. Hydrocarbon solvents are rarely used because of their flammability, drying time and handling issues. The brominated solvents are generally too aggressive, too smelly and too toxic. Silicone solvents and acetone are rarely used because of materials compatibility issues.

Powerful, fast-drying, residue-free Vertrel® answers many of these issues. The Vertrel® products easily mix into different blends and azeotropes, so the solvency can be tailored to the application. The products provide great cleaning because are very dense, so they lift away inorganic contamination and dissolve organic grease, oils and more. They dry quickly, which makes maintenance procedures easier, and they are nonflammable so safety is enhanced. Vertrel® cleaners also have a much lower surface tension than water and they evaporate quickly, easily, even from deep inside complex connectors.

Performing anayltical tests with Vertrel® is simple, fast and very cost-effective. When quality counts, select Vertrel®!
